A Peek in the Botany Class

The only way to show a seed dispersal video (thanks, Karen Good, for the link!) was to hold my laptop up in the air for them to see.

I had a few extra minutes, so I showed the Grade 5 kids the video I made of them last year--they LOVED seeing themselves!

Working on a roots lesson with Grade 6 and 7 kids

The students here are so accustomed to writing things down from the board that if I want them to know it, I have to write it on the board. I also have to tell them where to write it, and how to write it: "Must we write it down, teacher Cindy? May we use a colored pencil, teacher? Must we draw a line under it with a ruler, teacher? Do you want us to write the date first, teacher?) It's different from what I'm accustomed to, but I'm catching on. I try to spice it up by bringing in all kinds of props: today I had a carrot (tap root) and an onion and garlic (bulbs) and some dug-up grass (fibrous root systems) and a paper white bulb that I brought from the states which I have been rooting in gravel in an old dog dish. FUN!!!

  1. Hello to you all. Such amazing pictures. You are all certainly getting an education even as you give one! Cindy, the different instruction methods there are interesting to hear about--I'm glad the kids have you to teach them botany. I'm sure many will remember this class for years to come! Our kids here are having fun with botany too. Daniel and I had fun disecting the flower and finding the little ovules :-)
    God Bless!
