Moving Day

Aurora Swat team

Rae poses in front of the Walker's home, where we'll stay for our duration here
Today we moved in to our new home here near the school. This is a huge ranch house with 5 bedrooms and three bathrooms, so it's plenty roomy. This house belongs to the Walkers, but they are going to let us have their home for the month. They will move in when we are done here.

Move in day was kind of crazy, with us trying to get beds set up and figuring out the appliances and making adjustments for septic (needs some servicing Monday) and water tank (needs to settle a bit.) But we did go to the grocery store (the pic and pay) and we got a week's worth of food. It was SO fascinating to see all the new foods, and all the foods we could NOT get, such as tortilla chips, black beans, tomato juice, chicken broth, Parmesan cheese in a shaker bottle, sliced turkey, and salsa (available for about $5 a pint bottle.) April and I had brought a bunch of recipes with us to cook while we are here, but realized that anything Mexican was out of the question, and even spaghetti was iffy. I guess we need to have a Braii and cook up some mealie soup and eat biltong--then we'd be set! There HAS been much talk of going to a restaurant called "Carnivore" that serves a big 'ol tray of everything imaginable. Can't say I personally am a fan of the idea, but the Fodor's book says there are vegetarian options, so maybe I can have lentil bobotie--that sounds more like it to me!

Hard to believe we've been here a whole week--it is flying by too fast. I spent some time today with my camera investigating all around the property here, and it was so cool. I saw many plants I never saw before, and had a close encounter of the feathery kind, as Patrick and I accidentally flushed out the two resident owls from their resting spot. They are SO majestic! They flew to a nearby tree top and looked at us disapprovingly.

  1. Hmmmm, sounds like some new recipes will be finding their way back to the states, looking forward to trying some South African Specialties!

I wonder how the kids are enjoying the cuisine? What vegetables are being/have been planted at the school?
Knowing you Cindy, I doubt that any of your students received a sampling of (dare I say it)...
    candy. lol
    Love,
    Joanne
